David Ballantyne

David was keen to get back into work, but after a history of substance misuse lacked self confidence. Consequently, he was referred to Red Kite Learning and introduced to an employment training advisor.

David Ballantyne took his first step towards building a career in the theatre in January 2006. Without the help he received from Red Kite Learning David believes he would not have been able to do so.

After discussing his situation with his advisor David was presented with a number of options which he could explore.

As a result, David had the chance to volunteer at the Roundhouse Theatre doing front of house work. He took the position very seriously and saw it as a stepping stone to pursuing a career in the arts and theatre.

"My advisor was really great. By presenting me with various options for me to try she gave me confidence and helped me believe that I could get my life back on track."

David recently heard of a full-time job at Lock 17, Jongleurs Comedy Club assisting the stage manager, applied, and got the job, thanks to his new-found confidence and experience.

"This job is going to give me the start I need. I hope it’s the beginning of a new career in theatre and live entertainment. Fingers crossed this opportunity will lead to better and bigger things."

David would urge everyone to volunteer to learn new skills and make use of the free resources that are available for people looking to get back into work.

"I really lacked confidence in my own abilities and my employment training advisor always supported me and told me she had faith that I could do it."

He added: "I don’t know if I would have been able to get where I am now if it had not been for a gentle push in the right direction at the right time."

After just six months, David is working full-time at Jongleurs, volunteering one evening a week at the Roundhouse and has applied for a work placement at the Edinburgh Festival.
