Givaudan Givaudan

Have you ever wondered how the smell of your soap powder or the taste of your toothpaste got there? Working in partnership with the Exchange Group, Red Kite Learning’s first Train to Gain contract took us to the headquarters of Givaudan, one of the world’s leading producers of fragrances and flavours.

As we arrived at reception, our senses were treated to an array of pleasant fragrances.  Once we met our new learners, all Givaudan employees who wanted to improve their English, we realised we would have quite a challenge as the eight learners were all formerly soldiers from the Ghurka regiment, more at home in the battlefield than the classroom.

As we interviewed our new learners we were struck by how much they were enjoying their new life here in the UK as civilians. The majority have families here, their wives work locally and their children attend local schools and are doing really well.

Most of the learners were aiming to become British citizens, so our tutor, Anny Squire, focused much of the teaching around citizenship. In addition, topics relating to their work were taught, especially in numeracy.

At the end of three months our learners successfully gained nationally recognised qualifications in ESOL, Literacy and Numeracy.

Givaudan’s human resources department was pleased with their results and stated that the Train to Gain course had:

  • motivated the staff by showing that the company is interested in their personal development.
  • improved their employees’ written understanding of work related issues.
  • reduced the number customer complaints thanks to the numeracy training.
  • boosted the learners’ confidence in their verbal communication skills.
