Yannick came to Red Kite Learning with the aim gaining some qualifications using the time allowed in his 120 hour unpaid work for study or IAG.
As a boy he had been convinced he would have a career as a footballer and had taken no interest in school. Now he was glad of the opportunity to gain qualifications and move forward.
Yannick scored highly in his literacy and numeracy initial assessments. Having decided to focus on numeracy, he took homework then and there, an unusuallyenthusiastic response, says his tutor.
Yannick soon lost his initial shyness and soon became a quietly positive influence in the group. He found it far more adultto be able to start from what he could do and discuss problems and concepts that were not familiar in a small group.
Yannick recently attended an awards ceremony to receive his Level 1 Numeracy certificate (see photo). There he told his Red Kite Learning tutor that coming totuition had kick-started his interest in learning. He now realised there were different ways of approaching a problem, and he enjoyed ‘learning new stuff’.
Yannick has visibly gained in confidence and developed a positive sense of what the future could hold for him. He has been working with A4E staff to securetraining leading to well-paid and responsible employment in transport, which he is looking forward to starting in the next couple of months. He wouldalso like to learn Spanish and French, and ‘who knows what else’ he might be interested in learning in the future.
